Hormone levels vary in each person and in each pregnancy‭.‬ When pregnant, your body produces a pregnancy hormone called Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG). This hormone appears in your urine shortly after fertilisation takes place.

The bébé bloom® Early Detection Pregnancy Test can detect tiny amounts of this hormone in your urine as the sensitivity of this test is 10mIU/ml. Detecting if you are pregnant with 99% accuracy as early as five (5) days before the expected period.

Note: Due to the sensitivity of the test, people in menopause or perimenopause may have circulating levels of pituitary HCG. This might result in false positive results. In this case, using the bébé bloom® Pregnancy Test with higher sensitivity of 25mIU/mL is recommended.

Here’s a simple guide to get started:

Part 1. When to take the test

The test is designed to detect your HCG hormones as early as five (5) days before the expected period, and as early as six (6) days before the day of the missed period.

Note: The amount of pregnancy hormone increases as pregnancy progresses. If you test before your period is due and get a “Not Pregnant” result, there is still a chance that you may be pregnant.

Top tips before you start testing:

  1. Calculate your cycle length

To work out when your period is expected, calculate your usual cycle length by counting the number of days from the first day of your period until the day before your next period starts. The day of your expected period is based on the average number of menstrual cycle days reported for 3 previous cycles.

  2. Test at the same time each day

You can take the test at any time during the day. However, your first urine of the day will usually contain a higher concentration of HCG. If you’re testing before your expected period, we recommend you test with your first urine of the day. We also recommend avoiding excessive fluid intake before testing to prevent sample dilution.

  3. A strong positive result will be visible in as little as 10-30 seconds.

A weak positive result could take up to 5 minutes. We recommend you wait the complete reaction time of 5 minutes to confirm a negative result. If you received a positive result this won’t change after the 5-minute waiting period. To avoid incorrect test results, disregard after 15 minutes.

  4. You’ll know the test was used properly if a coloured line appears in the control region.

This means the ideal amount of urine was absorbed. If you’ve waited 5 minutes and no lines appear in the C region, you should retest using a new test kit.

  5. For accuracy, we recommended not taking the test after drinking alcohol.

Alcohol may or may not influence the test.

  6. Ensure the specimen container is dry and clean before testing.

Part 2. Using bébé bloom’s Early Detection Pregnancy Tests

Follow these steps to get the most accurate results‭. ‬

Step 1‭.‬ ‬Urinate into a clean and dry plastic or glass container. Removing the test strip from the sealed pouch, insert the strip into your urine as soon as possible.

Note: Do not touch the membrane located within the “Result Windows” and “Sample absorbent pad”. Do not open the foil pouch until the urine is collected and ready to be tested.

Step 2. With the arrows pointing toward the urine, submerge the test strip vertically for at least 10-15 seconds. Be careful not to dip the strip past the MAX line as shown in Image 1.

Once you see a red liquid appear in the Result observed area‭, ‬you may remove the test strip from the urine specimen and place the test strip down on a clean‭, ‬dry‭, ‬non-absorbent flat surface‭.‬

Step 3‭. Allow 5 to 10 minutes after completion of step two and then read your test results. Once 15 minutes have passed, the result is no longer considered an accurate reading.‬

Part 3. How to read your result

Notice the position of the Control Line‭ (‬C‭) ‬and Test Line‭ (‬T‭) ‬in Image 2‭.‬

Image 2. Result indicators

There are three possible results—

1. Positive result‭

You’ll see two coloured lines appear at the Test Line‭ (‬T‭) ‬and at the Control Line‭ (‬C‭). ‬The test line might be lighter than the control line‭.

Two coloured lines should be interpreted as a positive result; you are likely pregnant. We recommend speaking with your doctor to confirm your pregnancy and discuss the next steps. Check with your doctor if you received this result and don’t think you are pregnant. The earlier you see your doctor, the better it is for your health.

If you see two distinct and clear bands appear, but one band is darker than the other, this should also be interpreted as a positive result; you are likely pregnant.

2. Negative result‭: ‬You may find only one coloured line appears in the Control Line and no coloured line in the Test Line‭.

One coloured line means it’s unlikely you are pregnant. It could also mean the levels of your pregnancy hormone may not be high enough yet to be detected, or you may have miscalculated the day your period was expected.

If you notice faint lines blotches, shadows, or evaporation marks, this indicates a negative result. The test line will be distinct and pronounced. If the line is faint and you are unsure, try testing again in 48 hours. The line will darken as greater concentrations of your HCG hormone are produced after conceiving.

You may receive a false-negative result (negative when pregnancy exists) if your urine is too diluted, or you’re in the very early stages of pregnancy. If you suspect you’re pregnant, we recommend performing the test again with a fresh urine specimen at least 48 hours after initial testing.

If the second test is still negative, and you still haven’t got your period, seek advice from your doctor.

False or misleading results:

  • Negative results are expected in healthy non-pregnant people. If you find the test is producing an unexpected result, you should discuss this with your doctor.

  • Fertility drugs containing HCG may provide a false “pregnant” result if tested too soon after administration (these fertility drugs are usually given by injection).

  • Other fertility therapies (e.g. clomiphene citrate), pain killers, antibiotics, or hormonal contraceptives (e.g. contraceptive pill) should not affect the test.

  • If you have recently stopped using hormonal contraception or are using fertility therapies like clomiphene citrate, your periods may be irregular, leading to an inaccurate testing window.

  • If you have recently been pregnant (e.g., delivery, spontaneous abortion, or termination), you may get a false “pregnant” result.

3. Invalid result‭:‬‭ ‬The absence of a coloured line in the control region is an invalid result‭. ‬You should repeat the test with a new test device‭.
